ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDS & SITE RESEARCH
Satellite & Street (both Esri — no API key needed) · live tiles — needs internet on first load. Keep the supplied map files together.

Sharing shows your name, position and heading to everyone connected to the hub. You only see others while you are sharing too.
Default Layers
Geographic layers
Historic roads & trackways
OSM lines locally bundled. Historic candidates are sparse; ordinary tracks and paths are not proof of historic use.
Markets, coins & hoards
Market crosses are NOT confirmed fairgrounds; findspot coordinates may be approximate. Other non-coin hoards are excluded.
Prehistoric & early historic records
Categories may overlap. Outside the North-East, specialist categories are candidate matches from Canmore site types, not independently verified. Historic routes still need separate Scotland-wide sources; official HES designated boundaries are now Scotland-wide. Archaeological sites are not permission to detect.
Early medieval — Viking & Norse
Canmore site-type keyword matches; verify the original record.
Cropmarks & buried features
Includes recorded cropmarks and separately identified ring ditches / pit alignments. Not all candidates are confirmed cropmarks. Pins show recorded locations, not feature outlines. Check site evidence and protected-area boundaries before visiting.
Historic settlements & landscape
Recorded sites are not always independently dated. Farmsteads, mills and crossings may be post-medieval or modern. Records can belong to several categories; one pin per site record. Check official designation boundaries and permissions.
Historic justice & assembly
Records include place-name clues only, which do not prove a court or execution site. Check source classifications and evidence in each popup. One pin per site record, including overlaps with other layers.
Historic transport, trade & industry
Filtered by recorded site classifications, not proof of age or survival. Railways are site pins, not continuous track lines. Medieval pottery requires medieval dating in the record. Categories may overlap; one pin per site record. No permission to detect is implied.
Directions starting point (optional)
Leave blank for Google Maps to use your current location. Saved on this device.
Aircraft archaeology
Explicit crash, wreck or accident matches only; verify records and never disturb wreckage.
Modern Facilities (OpenStreetMap)
Off by default. Tick a category to show offline OpenStreetMap facilities. Opening times may be incomplete. Facility dots appear when zoomed in; graphical symbols appear from zoom 13, like archaeological pins. GPS position remains visible at all zoom levels.
Official protected & designated areas (England)
Historic England National Heritage List boundary data. Shows only designated areas intersecting selected English counties, at suitable zoom levels. All three overlays start off. Confirm current legal designations with Historic England.
Official protected & designated areas (HES)
Official HES polygon data supplied by user. Scheduled Monuments and Inventory Battlefields cover Scotland; their boundaries display only in selected council areas and at suitable zoom levels. World Heritage Sites are Scotland-wide. Designation boundaries are for reference; confirm current legal boundaries and permissions with HES before any activity.
My Fields & Permissions
Draw a field by clicking its corners on the map. Finish after at least 3 corners.

⚠ SCHEDULED MONUMENT
Metal detecting on a Scheduled Monument without the required Scheduled Monument Consent may be a criminal offence. Landowner permission alone is not sufficient. Do not detect without the necessary consent.
My Finds (metal detector)
Click ⚒ Place find, then click the spot on the map where you found the item. A detector pin appears — click the pin to name the find, choose its category and add notes.
Private to this browser, on this computer. The 📍 line in each pin's popup shows where the pin was placed (WGS84 6-decimal + National Grid reference). Export a backup before switching computers or clearing browser data. Custom categories you add are remembered and appear as their own checkbox above. Photos are stored in this browser too and are included in backups (backups with photos can be large).
